She began her volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity in 1997 upon moving to Tuscaloosa, and resigned as secretary of the board in March 2013 to become Interim Executive Director.  By July 2013, the position had become permanent.  She is in her second term as board president of the Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates.  At First Presbyterian Church, she is an elder and choir member.

Ellen has been married to Dr. Daniel Potts for 31 years.  They have two daughters — Julie (a second year UA law student who received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Birmingham – Southern), and Maria (a junior psychology major at Birmingham – Southern).  Both daughters attended the Tuscaloosa City Schools K – 12.  Rounding out the family is their 14-year-old miniature dachshund, Heidi, who enjoyed attending both law and psychology classes via Zoom with Julie and Maria when they moved home in March at the start of the pandemic.
