Born December 13, 1964 in Sawyerville, AL, Dennis Conner is the son of Catherine Conner and Curtis Tinker.  He resides in Tuscaloosa, AL with his wife Carol, and their two children, Jalen and Jada.  Mr. Conner’s eldest son, Tavares Banks, also resides in Tuscaloosa.

Mr. Conner’s football career began in 1980 at Central High School. Mr. Conner attended Jackson State University where he represented the Tigers from 1983 to 1987.  During his senior year, he was honored as a Sheridan Black College All-American and was named Player of the Week twice.  Mr. Conner graduated from Jackson State University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame in 2005 and All-Century Team in 2011. In 1989, he was selected as Central High School’s Assistant Varsity Football Coach. Coach Conner was named Defensive Coordinator and later Assistant Head Football Coach for Stillman College in 1999.  In 2005, he was named as a finalist for AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year.

In 2010, Dennis Conner returned to Central High School as the Head Football Coach. To date, Mr. Conner’s coaching and mentoring has produced seven SIAC All Conference Players, seven All- Americans, four NFL players, and a host of AFL and CFL players.  In 2014, Coach Conner and the Falcon Football Team were featured on ESPN’s documentary series, “Outside the Lines”.  In 2019, Mr. Conner retired as Central’s Head Football Coach.

Currently, Mr. Conner is the Dean of Students at Central High School.  He continues to support athletics in his new role as Assistant Athletic Director. He has been employed by Tuscaloosa City Board of Education for 33 years.
